Magpie River
Overview
Beginning on Newfoundland's Labrador plateau, the Magpie River flows untouched through hundreds of kilometers of lake dotted virgin forests of pine and multi-coloured moss, hurling down steep granite gorges and off spectacular falls before emptying into the St. Lawrence River. Our only access to this seldom seen corner of North American wilderness is by float plane. Using self-bailing paddle rafts, we run Class 4 rapids, explore remote glacial-gouged lakes and gorges, watch for moose, bear and osprey, and bask in the canyon's extraordinary solitude.
Unfortunately the Magpie River is under threat of hydroelectric development whereby a proposed 30-foot dam will flood one of the most beautiful and challenging sections of the river. Other future proposals include dams that would destroy the 80-foot high Magpie Falls, one of the most impressive features found on any commercially rafted river. Join Esprit and Earth River Expeditions on the Magpie "Paddling for Preservation" expedition and help raise awareness for its plight.

| Day 1 |
|
Meet in the small port city of Sept Iles Quebec. Drive to lake where we are met by the floatplane that takes us to our put-in on the Magpie River. |
| Day 2-6 |
|
For six days we will explore a river canyon, which aside from the occasional explorer, few people have ever seen. We will run many challenging class III-IV+ rapids. A highlight of the expedition is Magpie Falls; where the entire river hurtles 85 feet off the Laurentian plateau in a thunderous crescendo of sound and spray. Our camp directly across from the falls is one of the most spectacular found on any river trip. The Magpie's remote falls, deep pools and pristine water make for excellent fishing and there will be ample time to fish at camp. |
| Day 7 |
|
This morning we run the biggest rapid on the river (class V) that starts directly below a 30-foot falls. From here we paddle to the takeout just above the Magpie-St.Lawrence River junction. In the evening there is a farewell dinner and the night spent at the hotel. |
