Awareness Workshops

The frontline of Leave No Trace training is the Awareness Workshop. An Awareness Workshop is any formal Leave No Trace presentation that is one-day or less in length. These presentations can include a wide variety of programs ranging from a 30-minute presentation to a day-long workshop. Experiential-based training, in an outdoor setting is encouraged.

These workshops are designed for educators, children, college students, Girl Scouts, outdoor professionals, Boy Scouts, trail crews, hiking club members and others interested in Leave No Trace skills and ethics. The course leader for an Awareness Workshop can be a Leave No Trace Master Educator, a Leave No Trace Trainer or other individual familiar with Leave No Trace.

Participants receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace. Workshop topics include the underlying ethics and seven principles of Leave No Trace:

Plan ahead and prepare.
Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
Dispose of waste properly.
Leave what you find.
Minimize campfire impacts.
Respect Wildlife.
Be considerate of other visitors.

What you should bring for your course

Please come prepared to spend time both in the classroom and outdoors. All SOLO first aid courses specialize in providing emergency care in a wilderness setting. Therefore, be prepared for any and all seasonal weather conditions by insuring that you have the appropriate clothing, footwear and outerwear (rain gear etc.) for your two day course. Please include a set of clothing that can be cut, torn or stained for use in patient simulations. It is also recommended that you bring a small day pack for carrying first aid supplies during simulations. For indoor classroom lectures, please bring pens and a notebook for taking notes to refresh your memory on key points in the future.
