Compared with the Noire and the Dumoine, the Coulonge River has the highest concentration of challenging whitewater and offers a more diverse geography through which to paddle. The Coulonge offers a good combination of lake travel and river travel featuring ledge style drops, deep channel runs and dramatic waterfalls. Esprit's 10 day exploration of the Coulonge begins at Lac Nichothea. Between our put in and the dramatic "Tall Pine" campsite, we will encounter the most intense stretch of class 3+ whitewater. With rapids like "Double Trouble", "Tall-pine" and the "Keel Hauler", we'll fine tune your whitewater paddling skills for success! During the river's quieter moments, keep a look out for spotted sandpipers and teeter-tails scavenging for insects along the shoreline. As our canoes meander around the frequent bends in the river, Great Blue Herons, Barred Owls and Mergansers are often spotted. Aside from the diverse birdlife, keep your eyes open for black bear, moose, wolves and beaver. Enjoy the camaraderie around the campfire, the spectacular scenery and the opportunity to escape into the wilds of Western Quebec.

What you should bring with you for your adventureAll your mandatory safety equipment is provided for you. Therefore, all you need to bring with you are some personal items to help make your trip even more enjoyable. We recommend that you bring a pair of shoes or sandals to wear on the river (they will get wet!), 1 pair of shoes for camp, your swimsuit and/or shorts, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, 1 warm sweater (fleece or wool), 1 long pair of pants (quick dry, fleece or wool), 1 waterproof jacket and pants, 1-2 pairs of socks (wool or fleece), personal toiletries, towel, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (thermarest or foam).
